Established in 1999 by CDR Peter Young in honor of his mother, Dorothy A. Young. Commander Peter A. Young, Jr., joined the Navy in New Rochelle, NY in October 1963 as an enlisted Seabee Recruit (CR). He attended Great Lakes Training Center and then reported for duty with the Public Works Department at NAS Memphis, TN. He transferred to NMCB-1, the “First and Finest”, NMCB-1 was the first Atlantic battalion to be assigned to Vietnam. The battalion arrived in Vietnam is March 1966. Commander Young completed 39 years 3 months of Naval service as a Commander. In his Navy career, he advanced to Equipment Operator Chief, was commissioned as a Warrant Officer then was selected as a limited duty officer. He was continuously promoted, reaching the status as the senior CMDR, LDO in the Civil Engineer Corps. He became President of Oil Combinations, Inc., of Wellesley, MA. in 1987. CDR Young passed away in 2015. Commander Young established a total of four SMSA scholarships.
Endowed Scholarships allow our investors to build a lasting legacy, impacting Seabee children and grandchildren for generations to come. Endowed Scholarships often honor or memorialize family members, Seabee leaders, NAVFAC units, organizations or corporations. Perpetual Named scholarships can be funded at three levels, $60,000, $120,000 and $150,000 and are named by the donor.
