Scholarship Criteria

 Scholarships are awarded for accredited four-year bachelor's degrees, two-year associates  degrees or Career & Technical Education (CTE) degrees (12-18 month career and technical education programs). We do not provide graduate school scholarships or scholarships for part-time programs or for great-grandchildren.

 

Scholarship awards may be used for tuition, books, academic-related fees and other costs of attendance.  Scholarships are renewable for up to four years, provided recipient meets academic requirements.

 

Scholarships are awarded based on the following criteria:

 

  • Applicants must be the child or grandchild of a Seabee or Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) officers.

    • Seabees are enlisted personnel with a Seabee rating, CEC officers, or others who have served or are serving in a Naval Construction Force Unit.  This includes members of other service branches assigned to a Seabee unit.  Active duty, reserve, retired and honorably discharged Seabee children and grandchildren are eligible to apply.

  • Applicants must currently be a senior in high school or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.​​

  • Scholarship Deadline is April 15th, 2020. Online Applications must be received no later than this date.

SMSA scholarship application will be available on January 2, 2020.

All applicants must submit a Scholarship Application

Additional documentation includes:

  • Verification of Sponsor’s eligibility as Seabee, CEC officer, or service with a Seabee unit. Acceptable official documents include DD-214, discharge or reenlistment certificates.

  • Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application and Statement of Financial Assistance from the college or university (if available) and signed IRS Form 1040 (Page 1 and 2)

  • Summary of Extracurricular Activities and Awards (school and community)

  • Summary of applicant employment history (Employers, dates and description of responsibilities)

  • High School Seniors must complete the transcript request form.

  • Applicants currently enrolled in college must submit an official college transcript.

  • Applicants must submit the personal statement essay.

  • The applicant and parent, step-parent, or guardian must sign and date the application.

Failure to submit an essay, a signed IRS form1040 or a transcript will result in
disqualification. Additionally, applications should be clearly and neatly completed.

What selection criteria are used to select recipients?
Scholarship selections are made on the basis of financial need, scholastic record, leadership, good citizenship and character.

 

What are the Seabee/CEC Sponsor requirements for applicants?
To apply for a scholarship, students must be children, step-children and/or grandchildren of any officer or enlisted member who serve or have served with the Naval Construction Force (Seabees) or the Navy Civil Engineer Corps (CEC).

 

Are step-children eligible to apply?
Yes! Step-children may be required to provide additional documentation to
show proof of relationship to their qualifying military parent (typically a tax
document or a marriage certificate).

 

Can I still apply for the SMSA scholarship if I’m receiving VA and/or GI Bill
benefits?

Yes! Our scholarship can be used in addition to any other benefits you may be receiving.

When is the Deadline?
