U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion EIGHT Memorial
Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Port Hueneme
This memorial, located beside the historic “Grinder” at Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme, honors the proud history and service of U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 8 (NMCB 8).
Commissioned on November 1, 1960, NMCB 8 served until December 20, 1969. The battalion earned recognition for its exceptional contributions through a Navy Unit Commendation for actions in 1966 and 1967.
During the Vietnam War, NMCB 8 played a vital role in constructing and maintaining infrastructure in support of military operations throughout the region. The battalion’s deployments included:
Camp Faulkner, Da Nang (1965-1966)
Camp Miller, Chu Lai (1966-1967)
Camp Wilkinson, Phu Bai (1968)
Camp Haskins, Da Nang (1969)
These forward deployments highlight the battalion’s adaptability and commitment to the mission during a critical period in U.S. military history.
