LONG BEACH — John Wallace Magandy, 66, of Long Beach, died Sunday, May 3, 1998 at his home after a long battle with cancer.
Mr. Magandy retired as a master chief from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service as a construction electrician in the Seabees. He also served 16 years in government service with the 20th Naval Construction Regiment as a training officer.
He was born Nov. 21, 1931, in Tyler, Minn., and joined the Navy in 1952, serving tours of duty in Vietnam, Great Lakes (Ill.) Training Center, Argentia, Newfoundland, Davisville, R.I, Minneapolis, Minn., Virginia Beach, Va., and Gulfport. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Arthur and Pearl Irene Magandy, and two sisters, Bernita Magandy and Vivian Buysse.
He is survived by his wife, Janet E. Magandy, six daughters, Maureen and Randy Sheets of Long Beach, Pam and Wayne Gordon of Long Beach, Debbie and Lee Loomis of Coos Bay, Ore., Peggy and SW1 Michael W. Morgan of Long Beach, Kate Magandy of Gulfport and Laura and Stan Hart of Gulfport; two sons, Michael and Cheryl Magandy of Long Beach and Timothy and Becky Magandy of Jackson; two sisters, Darial Wecker of Waseca, Minn., and Beverly Rasmussen of St. Cloud, Minn.; five granddaughters, Kimberly Loomis of Coos Bay, Ore., Megan Sheets of Long Beach, Erin Gordon of Long Beach, Ashley Morgan of Long Beach and Katlyn Hart of Gulfport, and nine grandsons, John Sheets of Long Beach, Bryan Gordon of Long Beach, Kyle Loomis of Coos Bay, Zachary Morgan of Long Beach, Kurt Loomis of Coos Bay, Matthew Magandy, Tyler Magandy, Ian Magandy and Noah Magandy, all of Long Beach.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. or until all visitations are complete at Riemann’s Funeral Home in Long Beach with a Rosary at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Long Beach. Burial with full military honors is 3 p.m. at the Biloxi National Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers are Ron Harvey, Billy Bley Sr., K.C. Crankshaw, Larry Brotzman, Dave Martin, Russell Brooks, Whit Meyers, Bob Zeller, Don Crawford, Don Redder, Ed Garside, Art Trudeau, Jack Huff, Reynold Sefton, John C. Adams, Tony Yates, Floyd Lehnertz, Billy Williamson, Chet Urbati, George Donoin and Jim Harvey.
The family prefers memorials to the Seabee Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Memorial Hospital at Gulfport Hospice Program or University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Page: A11
