Gilbert R. Briones, 81, passed away surrounded by his family on July 5, 2024. He was a man of faith, known for his loving, funny, and kind nature. Gilbert was a dedicated husband, father, “Pampo”, and friend, cherished deeply by all who knew him. As the family patriarch, he leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. Born in Albuquerque, Gilbert began his military career by enlisting in the United States Air Force at the age of 18, where he served for 5 years and began his education and trade as a plumber. He later enlisted into the United States Navy as a Seabee, serving another 18 years as a Utilities man. A proud two-tour Vietnam Veteran, Gilbert’s military journey also took him to Spain, Puerto Rico, and Diego Garcia before retiring in 1983 as a 1st Class Petty Officer E6 and returning home to Albuquerque. Following his military service, Gilbert established “Kandu Plumbing Inc.” where he flourished as a successful businessman and plumbing contractor for 20 years.

Gilbert is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Amelia, with whom he shared his life’s joys and challenges. Together, they raised three beloved children: Anthony Briones (Maria), Diane Gomez (Charlie), and Patricia Quintana (Fred Jr. ). His legacy extends through his eight cherished grandchildren: Anthony Jr., Joseph, Joshua, Emerita, Moises, Deanna, Melinda, and Michael, as well as his nine talented great-grandchildren: Sarah, Gabriella, Rebekah, Caleb, Jacob, Naya, Ulysses, Leonel, and Luca. Gilbert also leaves behind his brothers Alfred and Marty, sisters Mary, Barbara, and Kathy, and numerous nieces and nephews whom he held dear.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jennie Briones.

An avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, Gilbert enjoyed watching football with family and friends. He had a passion for food and was known as a food connoisseur. Gilbert found joy in the outdoors, traveling, and spending time with his family barbecuing, camping, and relaxing in his flower-filled backyard. In his leisure time, Gilbert could often be found reading the Bible, listening to music, and taking peaceful naps. A lifelong member of the American Legion Post 69 Albuquerque and DAV, Gilbert actively contributed to his community and supported fellow veterans.

The burial service will be held on July 22, 2024, at 2 pm at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 North Guadalupe Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501.

Gilbert R. Briones will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of faith, love, and kindness will continue to inspire and guide us all.
