Francis L. “Zeke” Horner, Sr. Obituary

Francis L. “Zeke/Sonny” Horner, Sr., 69, of 1821 Sheepford Road, Mechanicsburg, died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill.

He was born on Tuesday, October 16, 1934, in Carlisle, PA, son of the late Francis H. Horner and Caroline M. (Gibson) Horner.

He retired in 1995 as a foreman in the maintenance department with the Navy Ships Parts Control Center in Mechanicsburg, after 22 years of service and received numerous awards and recognitions during his career, including the Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1995, which he was the first and still only person ever to have received such an award in the Public Service Works.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1956; was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict and then served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1971-1994; and was the holder of the Navy Meritorious Award with Bronze Star.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Dillsburg, where he was currently a Trustee, and the American Legion Post in Dillsburg.
He was a 1953 graduate of Carlisle High School and a graduate of Harrisburg Area Community College.

He was a lover of animals and made nostalgic homemade sleds by hand.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack H. Horner.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Olive L. (Hollar) Horner of Mechanicsburg, PA; sons, Jerry D. Horner of Dillsburg, PA and Francis L. Horner, Jr. of Mechanicsburg, PA; daughter, Christine M. Choinski of Lebanon, CT; sister, Grace I. Zimmerman of Mechanicsburg, PA; 2 grandsons, Brandon and Duran Horner; and 1 granddaughter, Monica Horner; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 5, 2004 at 10: 30 a.m. in Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 South Hanover Street, Carlisle, with Rev. Edward E. Prowanti officiating. Burial with military honors provided by Cumberland County Honor Squad will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
