Date of passing 05/01/2024

Fred G. Grampp, 88, of Landis Store, PA, widower of Eva M. (Guldin) Grampp went to heaven to meet the love of his life Eva “Jeanie” (Guldin) Grampp.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Helen (Demian) and Fred Grampp. His Grandparents were Karl and Anna Grampp and John and Susanna Krauss Demian.

Jeanie, his beloved wife, was born on the Guldin Farm in the Oley Valley near Yellowhouse. She was the daughter of Theodore Guldin and Ella (Tobias) Guldin. Jeanie was proud of her Guldin and Tobias families. The Guldin Family arrived around the year 1710 and basically owned all of the Oley Valley. They had farms with over 2200 acres of land which is now Oley. The Yellowhouse Restaurant honors the Guldin Family since the Guldins were the family that started Yellowhouse.

Fred’s civilian job of 30 years plus was with the IBEW Local 126 Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and IBEW 90 out of Philadelphia. Fred owned and operated his own welding business doing jobs for Grand View Speedway, local businesses, local farmers, and residents in Berks County. As a young person after returning home from the Korean War, Fred started out working for Mooresville Bodyworks in Boyertown. He also worked at Homer Wellers Quarry and delivered coal to homes.

Senior Chief Fred Grampp is a Retired Navy Veteran. He was in the Korean War from 1951-1955. He was on the Samuel B. Roberts out of Newport, Rhode Island, and other ships out of Norfolk, Virginia. He visited Navy ports around the world, and one of his cherished Navy experiences was the traditional shellback crossing the equator with his navy shipmates. Fred would say he was a Tin Can Sailor at heart. Senior Chief Fred Grampp was with the Navy Seabees, RNMCB 21 from 1973 till he retired from the Navy Reserves. His Navy Seabee and USS Samuel B. Roberts shipmates are true brothers to him.

Senior Chief Fred Grampp’s Navy accomplishments include being the Seabee Company Chief in charge of all Harrisburg, Allentown, and Reading. The Seabees completed community projects in District Township in the 1980s. Fred and the Seabees restored the whole District Township facility, including all electricity, plumbing, heating & air conditioning, upgraded bathrooms, floors, classrooms, large roof, and painting, the District Township Facility was completely re-done. The Fred’s Seabee Unit also updated and installed all the recreational equipment, including swing sets, benches seats, and grills. The reason the District Township building and playground are in such excellent shape today is thanks to Senior Chief Grampp and the Navy Seabees. Fred also did community work with the Seabees for the Boy Scouts at Hawk Mountain, Reading, and Marine Corps Reserve Center Kenhurst Blvd. Senior Chief Grampp also had duty with the Seabees at Camp Lejeune with the Marines, Little Creek Norfolk, VA, Gulfport, Mississippi, Indian Town Gap National Guard Base, Lakehurst, New Jersey, Camp Shelby, and NAS Bermuda to name a few.

Fred was also a Navy Recruiter in Boyertown on South Reading Ave across from Schaffer’s Restaurant. Fred and his shipmates would go there for lunch and one of their favorite morale-building sayings, when they arrived, was “The fleet is in”. All the Schaffer’s restaurant customers and waitresses enjoyed the friendly comradeship with Senior Chief Grampp and his Navy recruiter co-workers. His Navy shipmates are true brothers to him.

Fred was dedicated to the District Township residents and community. He was the Constable for District Township at a Landis Store, a local get-together he performed was the marriage ceremony for his close friends, Dave and Sandy Blank (Of Dave Blanks Christmas Trees). Fred, Richard Mauger, and Francis “Sonny” Kreiser started the Landis Store Local Boys Club and made a membership coin for entrance for the get-togethers at Largewood Camp (now the District Township Facility). Senior Chief Fred Grampp and the Navy Seabees volunteered to repair the township building and the outside swing set area. Fred going above and beyond plowed all the Landis Store resident’s senior citizen driveways during all snow days. For many years he also volunteered for the Boyertown Multi-Service Center driving to Philadelphia hauling all the food boxes for the meals on wheels to the Boyertown Multi-Service Center.

Fred loved to sail and his dream was to sail around the world on his sailboat the Solitary Sandpiper. His granddaughter Seleena is carrying his dream and legacy with sailing and being the next Jacques Cousteau. On his sailboat, he had his Muneco Jamaican Masculino named Hey Maan for Bueno Suerte. (Jamaican Good Luck with the sailing sea travels.)

Eva “Jeanie” (Guldin) Grampp, his wife of 67 years, grew up farming with her parents and two sisters, and three brothers. She met Fred at Landis Store where she was pumping gas for her Studio Baker. Freddy had just come home from the Navy and had to ask Ralph Hoffman the owner of Landis Store about the youngest Guldin girl. Jeanie being a tough Guldin girl, when Fred tried to talk to her to try for a date she told him she was married. Ralph told Fred that she was not married. After many persistent attempts by Fred, Jeanie finally went out on a date with Fred. When they were first married, they lived in the upstairs Landis Store apartment. Cherished memory’s forever.

Since Jeanie the age of 16, Jeanie worked in many of the Boyertown Sewing & Shoe factories. In a couple of the factories, her sister Betty (Guldin) Gangaway was the floor lady in charge. Jeanie, her sister Betty, and Jeanie’s many factory friends had a good time at work. They worked hard but had fun all the time while working at the sewing factories. They all got together to go going dancing at the Washington Inn and on bus trips to see the Chippendales in Atlantic City, New Jersey. They all would meet for lunch at Burger Chef in Boyertown. Jeanie loved her home, growing up she lived on farms and worked on the Guldin farms all her life, Jeanie definitely had the green thumb. Her garden at her home each year had zillions of baskets of tomatoes, beans, red beets, cabbage for homemade sauerkraut, broccoli, strawberry, and bunches of vegetables. Like her mother, Ella Tobias Guldin, Jeanie canned all her homegrown garden vegetables. She always would share her vegetables from her garden with her friends, neighbors, and family including all the delicious homemade baking items she made. Everyone’s favorite was her cinnamon buns especially when they just came out of Jeanie’s oven. Like her mother, Ella Guldin, Jeanie could bake anything and it was delicious. Jeanie loved her home, garden, and her yard which she took excellent care of after working in the sewing factory all day. Jeanie’s home could have been on the cover of house beautiful each month!!!
