Edward Russell Chantiny
CRYSTAL FALLS — Edward Russell Chantiny, 89, of Crystal Falls, passed away Nov. 16, 2023, at Marshfield Medical Center – Dickinson in Iron Mountain.
He was born June 17, 1934, in Tuscola County, Mich., to Frank and Mary (Kuna) Chantiny. Edward graduated from Kingston High School in 1952 and trade school in Troy, Ohio, as a certified welder in 1958.
He married Janice TerBush on Jan. 26, 1963. Edward entered the U.S. Navy in 1954 and transferred to the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1958 where he served until 1986, retired SCPO/E8. He was a proud SeaBee and served three years in the Philippine Islands.
Ed was employed by MDOT from 1963-1993. He worked on a survey crew, bridge maintenance, and retired as a highway maintenance superintendent for the Western Upper MI, District 1.
Ed was a member of the Crystal Falls Rotary Club, hosting two exchange students, American Legion Post 87 and Grace Covenant Church, Iron River. After retirement, Ed and Jan traveled to national parks and 48 states, visiting family and friends along the way.
Ed’s hobbies were gardening, ice fishing and showing his grandchildren, Joey, Nikki, Nathan, Jacob and Michael the natural wonders of Upper Michigan.
Survivors include his wife Janice of 60 years; two sons, Joseph (Julie) and Mathew (Lisa) Chantiny; five grandchildren, Nathan, Jacob, Michael, Joey (Roxanne) Chantiny and Nikki (Key) Dieck; three great-grandchildren, Derrick Dieck, Louis and Thomas Chantiny. his sister, Jeanette Robare; his brother, Charles Chantiny; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Francis, Harm and Oscar Chantiny; four sisters, Angeline Bass, Marie Kaufeld, Lorraine Cramer and Florence Werner; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry or Grace Covenant Church in Iron River.
Memorial services will be held this summer. Burial will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Mich.
