Jeffrey A. Brock Obituary

Jeffrey A. Brock, born December 14, 1945, passed away June 6, 2019, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

During his 73 years, Jeff visited and worked in more than 150 countries, bungee jumped off the Victoria Falls Bridge between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and hit three holes in one on a par 4 course in Islamabad, Pakistan. One of these trips abroad led Jeff to his greatest adventure: his wife.
In 1985 at the tail end of his 20-year career in the U.S. Navy Seabees, Chief Petty Officer Brock was attached to the Naval Support Unit, U.S. State Department, performing several security upgrade projects at the U.S. Embassy in Panama. It was at an Embassy party that Jeff met Joy, using his sense of humor to capture her attention that night and cookie baking prowess to eventually capture her heart. The two married on September 15, 1988.

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Jeff grew up in Montana hiking the rugged terrain of Glacier National Park with his Norwegian grandmother and half-brother. Through the years, Jeff proved to be a rolling stone. Following his career in the Navy, Jeff spent nearly 30 years supporting the State Department. In 2001, Jeff joined the U.S. Foreign Service, traveling with his wife, two dogs, and cat to Almaty, Kazakhstan. In 2003, he was assigned to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they expanded their family by two more furry friends.

With a booming voice and even bigger personality, Jeff left an impression wherever he went. Beneath his jokes and sarcastic quips was a generous and compassionate man. As a facilities manager, Jeff was a master of all trades. Through mentorship, Jeff empowered others helping them achieve a better life for themselves. He valued people for the content of their character, and considered his friends around the globe family.

Even in his final days, Jeff’s work ethic and humor were on display. He said, “Well, if it’s time for me to go, God must need a good electrician.”

Jeff is survived by his wife, Joy; his half-brother Gregory George Brock; sister-in-law, Priscilla Thrower Knight; niece, JJ Knight; and his two cats, Michi and Sophie.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in memoriam of Jeff Brock to the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach at www.humanesocietynmb.org. Donations can also be mailed to the shelter at P.O. Box 3369, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582.
