Gene Glasco, Sr., 88, of Virginia Beach passed away on July 31, 2022. He was the son of the of the late Henry Dewrel Glasco and the late Marsha Bryte Costner Glasco. He was predeceased by his son, Emmett Dewrel Glasco.

Gene graduated from Valdese High School in 1952. He joined the Navy in August of this same year and spent 4 years serving our country, two of those years he spent in Japan. After his time in the Navy, Gene doffed his naval uniform and signed up to wear the black and gold colors of Wake Forest University where he graduated in 1960. He moved to Virginia Beach to become a teacher. And it was at Aragona Elementary School that he met and fell in love with the music teacher, May Sue Reese. While teaching, he earned a master’s degree from the College of William and Mary and an Educational Specialist degree from George Washington University.

Gene served as a teacher, instructional specialist, and a Principal with the Virginia Beach City Public Schools. He was a charter member of the Virginia Beach Optimist Club and served as the President of the Virginia Beach Principal’s Association. He was a member and Past Master of Virginia Beach Lodge 274 AF&AM. He taught AARP Safe Driving Classes for 25 years and served as Past Vice President of Naval Seabee Group 1. Gene owned and operated the Scotland Wharf Recreational Center in Surry county during the 1960’s as well. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Virginia Beach and Wakefield Baptist Church.

Gene was always a strong supporter of the PTA throughout his many years as a teacher and a Principal. He served for many years as a volunteer of the PTA Store. Gene will be remembered for his sense of humor; however, he probably will be remembered more for his loyalty, devotion, and support of his wife, Sue and his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, May Sue Reese Glasco; son, Gene Glasco, Jr.; daughter, Jenny Sue Glasco Flannagan and husband, Bill; four grandchildren, Beth Flannagan, Hugh Flannagan, Gabby Glasco, and Reese Glasco and brother, Harry Glasco. Gene has many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended families, and many students whom he remembered fondly.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Wakefield Baptist Church, 104 West Church Street, Wakefield, VA, followed by a light reception in the Fellowship Hall.
