Leo Allen Gavroy, 93, of New Castle passed away the evening of July 18, 2020, at his residence.
Born on Dec. 8, 1926, in New Castle, he was a son of the late Andrew J. and Anne H. (Beiber) Gavroy.
On Oct. 2, 1948, he married his beloved wife of 71 years, Ruth (Settlemeyer) Gavroy. Mrs. Gavroy survives at home.
Leo was a graduate of New Castle High School.
He proudly and selflessly served his county in the United States Navy, Army and Seabees and was active in World War II and the Korean War.
He was employed by Fisher Bros. as an assistant manager and worked in collection for the New Castle News.
He was a volunteer at the New Castle Playhouse, was a member of the VFW, the Boy Scouts and American Legion.
What gave Leo the most joy in life was spending time with is family.
He was a life member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
In addition to his wife, Leo is survived by two sons, Steve (Loreli) Gavroy of New Castle and John (Donna) Gavroy of Willowick, Ohio; two daughters, Audrey (Gary) Palmer and Kim (Jeffrey) Sutton, both of New Castle; a sister, Alice Jeanie (Ralph) Kaufman of New Wilmington; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Leo was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Norman Gavroy; and a sister, Martha Fullerton.
A private family service will be held at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, where the New Castle Area Honor Guard and Rev. Chuck Gavroy will be officiating.
Visitors are asked to adhere to the CDC guidelines regarding wearing face masks and practicing social distancing.
