Robert Exton “Reb” Black, 63, of Opelika, died Saturday, April 8, 2023, at his home.
Born on March 20, 1960, Reb was raised in Opelika and was a 1978 graduate of Opelika High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served six years as a Petty Officer Second Class in the U.S. Navy Seabees. Upon completion of his military service, Reb enrolled in Opelika State Technical College, where he earned a degree in upholstery and went on to join his brother, Rusty, at Black’s Custom Upholstery. In 1990, he went to work for Charter Communications and in 2005, joined the team at Hyundai Manufacturing in Montgomery, where he was employed until this year.
Reb’s passions included antique cars, particularly his beloved 1976 Triumph TR6, aviation, the United States military, rescue dogs and RV camping.
Reb was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Muriel Black of Opelika. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Dina Hovey Black; sons, Will (Tatum) and Tristan Black of Opelika; daughter, Madison (Nick) Bak of Suffolk, VA.; one grandson, John Shepherd Black of Opelika; and brothers, Reid and Rusty (Gwen) of Opelika.
Per Reb’s wishes, the family will have a private celebration of life. The family requests donations in Reb’s honor be made to the Lee County Humane Society. Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home and Crematory is handling arrangements.
