Mr. Walter Leroy Goetzmann

Walter Leroy Goetzmann, 93, of Jasper, went home to be with Jesus on December 24, 2022. He passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Leroy was born June 28, 1929, in Pitkin, La., to the late William and Nellie Goetzmann. He married the love of his life, Wilma Sue Harper, on May 24, 1951. They had been married 64 years when she passed away.

Leroy was a committed Christian, a proud LSU graduate, Navy SeaBee, veteran during Korean War, former deacon at First Baptist Church of Lafayette, La., and member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Curry.

Leroy had a 53-year career as a landman in the oil industry. He absolutely loved his work, retiring at age 80 as land manager of J.P. Oil Company

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Sue, his parents, brothers and great-granddaughter, Aubrey Lea Gates.

Left with loving memories are his daughter, Patricia Judge (Randy); his son, Walter Goetzmann (Renea), grandchildren, Talia Gates (Josh), Beau Judge (Lucy) and Ryan Gates. Leroy was Papa to nine great-grandchildren, Kye, Aubrey and Zane Gates, Piper, Heidi, Deacon and Tessa Judge, and Ryder and Nora Gates.

In honor of his granddaughter, Dr. Talia Gates, he donated his body to the University of Alabama Medical School. A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date. Because tithing and support of the local church were some of Leroy’s highest priorities, please donate to your church in his honor.
