Mr. Stonewell Serrett

Date of birth 11/25/1924
Date of passing 04/07/2025

Stonewell “Stoney” Serrett was born on November 25th, 1924 and entered into his heavenly home on April 7th, 2025 surrounded by family. The same dogged determination that characterized his whole life insured he made it to 100 years (along with his unfailing commitment to exercising!). Stoney was a beloved husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Mary Gladys Serrett; his parents, Beatrice Carr Serrett and John Baptiste Serrett; and his nine siblings – Raymond, Cleveland “Pat”, Selma, Stanley, Lillian, John “Houston”, Sybil, and Florence. He was the eighth of 10 children in a close-knit family who remained that way their whole lives. He was the ultimate devoted family man, always there for his children and willing to help, even in their adult years. After his retirement, he spent many years “doing his genealogy”, tracing the Serrett family to the 1700’s in France, as it was important to him that we knew our family roots. If Stoney was your friend, it was for life. He kept in touch with childhood friends, even those from first grade, until they all passed away. His closest friendships, however, were forged with the young men he met in the Navy during WWII with whom he established life-long bonds. Stoney was a Christian with a strong faith and unfailing moral compass. He was also a proud American, spending 25 years in the Navy Seabees, serving during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. His military service took him all over the world spending time in Truk, Guam, Okinawa, Bermuda, the Great Lakes, Italy, and Morocco and likely inspiring his love of travel. In later years, he spent long hours contacting individuals to establish MCB2 reunions with others who had served in his battalion. He and Gladys enjoyed traveling all over the US to reminisce at those reunions. Stoney loved sports, playing them as a youth, coaching as an adult, and watching them all his life. He loved watching a good baseball/football game especially when one of his grandchildren, or his LSU tigers, were playing. Although generally a quiet man, who rarely raised his voice, it was a different story if he was excited over a play or felt his team was being treated unfairly. You knew he was happy when he began whistling, took out his harmonica, or began singing the “old Lo-Dee-Tee” song. He will always be remembered for his deep love of family, kindness, work ethic (“If you can’t do your best,…”), helping nature, easy-going disposition, love of learning, encyclopedic knowledge of baseball/football facts and records, and a tremendous sweet tooth (especially for DQ blizzards). His idea of Heaven on Earth was watching a football game on TV, listening to a baseball game on the radio, and enjoying a quart of ice cream and we suspect that he’s settled nicely into Heaven doing just that surrounded by friends and family. He’s survived by his four children: Darrell (Sandy), Michael, Karen, and Laurie (Blaine); 12 grandchildren – Missy, Darrell Jr. (Cheryl “Tootie”), Michael, Jeff (Roberta), Erin, Emily, Francelle (Chip), Ashley (Blaine), Brittney (Sal), Nik (Jenny), and Brynt (Kayla); 25 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren and was excited to meet his latest great-great-granddaughter, Caleigh, at his 100th birthday party. He will be dearly missed by all. “I once thought home was a place but it was actually Daddy and Momma.” A visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Friday, April 11th, 2025 from 12:30 until funeral services at 2:30. Burial will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Please visit www.greenoaksfunerals.com to leave condolences to the family.
