Mr. Royal N. “Roy” Monroe Jr.

Royal N. “Roy” Monroe, Jr., 94, of Upper Sandusky, passed away peacefully at 9:21am on Monday, April 12, 2021 at his residence with family by his side.

Born in Cold Spring, NY on December 22, 1926, he was the son of Royal N., Sr.and Clara (Hutchinson) Monroe. He was the oldest of nine children and last of them to pass.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Turley Monroe. They were married on September 5, 2005 and she resides in Upper Sandusky. Two step-children survive: Chris (Mike) Crites of Green, OH and Tony (Karen) Turley of Sylvania, OH; as well as, seven step-grandchildren: Adeana (Scott) Gray, Brandon (Mackenzie) Crites, Keegan Crites, Kaitlin (Brian) Crites-Lawson, Rebecca (Mark) Grimes, Matthew Turley and Joseph Turley; and five great step-grandchildren.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Janice and eight siblings.

Roy grew up in Cold Spring, NY. After graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and is a veteran of WWII having served two years in the South Pacific as a Seabee. Upon returning to the states, he received a four year degree from Albany State College and played semi-professional baseball for four years. He enjoyed a short career of teaching English and Latin at the high school level. He then went to work for Liberty Mutual Insurance in New York City and retired as a claims manager in 1991. He moved to Pawleys Island, SC, where he and Wanda met and married. They stayed there until 2014 when they returned to Upper Sandusky.

Roy and Wanda were avid golfers, as evidenced by marrying on the 17th green of a golf course in SC. They enjoyed traveling, playing cards and loved time spent with family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, with Rev. Kenneth Wessler officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wyandot Memorial Hospital Hospice Fund and sent to Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, 476, S. Sandusky Ave. Upper Sandusky, OH. 43351.
