Mariposa, California – Ronald “Ron” Johnson was born on June 6, 1946, in Merced, California to parents Alfred and Frances Johnson and passed away on February 13, 2024.
Ron was a longtime resident of Merced and Mariposa Counties. He graduated from Merced High School. After graduation Ron served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee. While serving in the military he was responsible for constructing military camps during the Vietnam War. After returning from the war, he spent a year in Alaska beginning a lifelong career in the welding and fabrication industry. As a skilled craftsman, he spent a lifetime creating enduring works from metal, wood, and other materials, leaving behind tangible reminders of his talent and creativity.
Upon returning to Merced Ron met the love of his life, Debbie, by chance at a drive-in movie theater. They were married on June 2, 1972, and spent 51 loving years dedicated to each other and their family. Together they raised two children and enjoyed being grandparents to five grandchildren. Once retired they delighted in vacations to Hawaii, Alaska, and the Panama Canal. Ron was fiercely devoted to his family and friends. He was a man of few words, yet his actions spoke volumes about his love and commitment to those he held dear.
Ron was a car enthusiast, particularly 57 Chevy’s. On most days he took pleasure in golf; playing with family and friends or simply watching a match on TV. But most of all Ron loved food. Whether he was the chef preparing his famous Sunday morning French toast, or the critic (rather a willing “guinea pig”) of new recipes, Ron frequently found pleasure in being surrounded by family and friends around the dinner table.
Ron is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Johnson, his children, Lori Verceles and Ron Johnson, and his five grandchildren, Kimo Verceles, Danielle Johnson, Ivy Johnson, Josh Johnson, and Ellie Johnson. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Ron’s life will be held on Saturday, February 24th at 11:00 a.m. at Mariposa Lutheran Church, located at 4469 State Highway 49 South, Mariposa, CA 95338. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
