Robert A. Holmes of Commerce Twp. died March 16, 2022. He was 78 years old. Bob was born March 21, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois, one of nine children born to Edith (nee Brownell) and William Holmes. He attended Loyola University in Chicago before joining the Navy. Bob chose to serve his country as a Seabee serving two tours in Vietnam (1966,1967,1968) as a member of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5 assigned to the 3rd Marines Amphibious Corps. After returning home, Bob married his first wife, Sharon. Together they had 2 sons. Sadly she passed away from breast cancer in 1990.
Professionally, Bob worked as a fasteners engineer primarily designing and supplying parts for the automotive industry. He was a proficient problem solver and often the one his peers would look to when designs needed to be adapted or modified.
Bob was known as a remarkable listener and a very articulate man who was always willing to teach and advise. With his quick wit and affinity for “dad jokes”, he charmed and made feel welcome all those who shared his company. Bob will be remembered most for his infectious smile and the love he had for his blended family. He was a kind man, devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend who was truly loved and will be deeply missed.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Sandy Holmes and children, Aaron (Tina), Paul (Brittany), Malisa (Steven) Burt, Melanie (Dr. Darrin) Foszcz, and Dr. Lynette (Patrick) Mahoney. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Morgan (fiancé Justin) Folino, Alaina (Nathan) Lopp, A.J. Folino, Ethan Burt, Quinn Mahoney, Ashley Foszcz, Norah Mahoney, Alex Witt, and Liam Witt.
