Richard “Dick” Gardner, surrounded by family, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025, at Leominster Hospital after a brief illness.
Born on March 19, 1935, in Fitzwilliam NH, Dick’s journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for his family and community. Dick was the beloved husband of the late Marcia (Gionet) Gardner, who preceded him in death in December 2023. Together, they created beautiful memories and fostered a nurturing home filled with joy and laughter. His legacy of love continues through his son, Richard Gardner Jr. and wife Michelle of Gloucester, VA; his daughter, Carrie Marcil and husband Kenneth of Seekonk, MA; his adored grandchildren, Zachary Gardner and wife Kiersten, Valerie Milliron, Samantha Marcil, and Teagan Mersereau and husband Samuel; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Waylon, Townes, Landon, Liam, and Shalom. Dick also leaves behind his brother, James (JB) Gardner, numerous treasured nephews and nieces, and the memory of his late brother, William (Billy) Gardner.
A proud alumnus of Leominster High School, Dick represented the Blue Devils on the football field.
Following high school, he answered the call of duty and served his country with honor in the United States Navy (SeaBee’s). His service took him to distant shores, including Greenland, Africa, and Eleuthera, where he built a foundation of discipline and hard work that would characterize his entire life.
After his military service, Dick returned to his roots and began a longstanding career at the Norton Company in Worcester, working diligently in the abrasives division. His work ethic and commitment to excellence earned him the respect and admiration of his supervisors and colleagues.
Dick’s keen eye and appreciation of Americana had him follow his father’s footsteps into the auction, antiques, and appraisal business where he was a familiar and respected figure. He hosted monthly antique auctions, conducted on-site estate auctions, participated in antique shows and flea markets and relished the thrill of ‘door knocking’ for that next hidden treasure.
Faith played a central role in Dick’s life, and he held the distinction of being the oldest person in the Worcester diocese to make his confirmation. He was a devoted member of St. Anthony of Padua parish in Shirley MA.
A man of diverse interests, Dick enjoyed exploring family history, politics, traveling, and being a steadfast supporter at his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting other special events.
He and his wife Marcia cherished their vacations in York, Maine, where their trailer became a hub of happiness for family and friends.
Dick enjoyed the outdoors including taking his family camping and years of memorable hunting and fishing adventures.
Dick Gardner’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love, service, and commitment. He touched the lives of many and left a legacy of kindness and friendship. As we celebrate his life, we carry forward the values he embodied and the memories he gifted us.
Dick’s journey on earth has concluded, but his spirit remains an ever-present force in the hearts of those who loved him.
