Mr. Peter Liapes

Peter John Liapes, 84, of Running Springs, California, passed away on October 16, 2025, at Valley Crest Memory Care in Apple Valley, California.

Born on January 20, 1941, Peter was the son of George P. Liapes and Cora (Bruce) Liapes of Queensbury, New York. He graduated from Queensbury High School and continued his education at SUNY Cobleskill. Peter served with honor in the U.S. Navy Seabees during the Vietnam War, a chapter of his life that reflected his dedication and resilience.

Following his military service, Peter devoted many years to firefighting with the U.S. Forest Service. His work reflected his deep connection to nature and his enduring love for the San Bernardino Mountains and the Big Bear Valley—places that remained close to his heart throughout his life.

Peter is survived by his children, Jill Liapes Darwish of Twin Peaks, California, and Jeffrey Peter Liapes of Bend, Oregon; grandchildren, Alissa Darwish, Samuel Darwish, Hayden Liapes, and Daniel Condie; great-grandson, Silas Condie; sister, Katherine Peaslee; nieces, Christine Peaslee, Sharon Amash, and Melissa Peaslee; as well as several cousins.

Known for his vivid storytelling and strong ties to the land he cherished, Peter left a lasting impression on those who knew him. He enjoyed collecting arrowheads and other artifacts, building a collection that reflected both curiosity and reverence for history.

Donations in Peter’s memory may be made to Friends of Big Bear Valley in his honor.
