Norman “Russ” Anderson Jr, 88, of Duluth, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at Marywood in Kenwood with his daughter and son-in-law by his side. He was born March 28, 1934 in Duluth, raised in Esko, MN until age 12 when the family moved to Duluth’s West End. He graduated from Denfeld H.S. in 1952 and was a proud honorary Esko 1952 grad, attending both school’s reunions. During his senior year he enlisted in the Naval Reserves, served two years active duty with the Seabee’s, and was honorably discharged in 1960. He began his 28-year civilian job at Bridgeman Creameries after high school and transitioned to the Water and Gas retiring in 1996. Russ began racing stock cars in 1954 and won the city championship in 1960 at the former Duluth Speedway. When his son Rusty began racing stock cars in the 80’s, Russ was in his glory being the crew chief. Russ had a deep passion for old Fords and Flathead engines. He spent nine years totally restoring his 1934. He was the go-to guy for anyone looking for spare parts that he accumulated from years of attending swap meets. Russ and his friend Dale L. were the original founders of the Wednesday Night car gatherings. After the death of his son in 2004, Russ reunited with his high school sweetheart, Shirley (Christensen) Alvarez, spending 11 happy years together until her passing in 2016.

Russ was also preceded in death by his parents; son, Russell Anderson; brother-in-law, Frank Gerard; niece, Mary Malvick; and nephew, Tom Gerard.

Russ is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nanette and Shawn Higgins, their children Brooke, Ashley, and Shawn Jr.; Daughter-in-law, Suzanne Anderson, her children Samantha, Katie, and Rusty; sister, Norma Gerard; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family would like to thank Marywood special caregivers, Lisa, Kelsey, and Julie B; nurses, Steve and Mel; Pastor Liz; and the kitchen staff for all their outstanding and compassionate care. Thank you Dr. Nisswandt and NP Lindsay for their exceptional care and always listening to the family.

Visitation to be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, July 22nd with Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Animal Allies. The family invites you to please bring your special car and have one last car gathering for Russ.
