Final Salute

MICHAEL “MIKE” JOHN SAUER, 72, of Red Bud, Illinois, passed away at 5:08 am, Sunday, August 24, 2025, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri.

He was born to the late Milton and Almaneda (nee Becker) Sauer on May 5, 1953, in Red Bud, Illinois.

Mike married Peggy (nee Offermann) Braun on June 17, 1988, in Red Bud, Illinois; she survives.

He had worked as a security therapist aide at Chester Mental Health Center in Chester, Illinois, for 17 years until his retirement in 1991.

Mike was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud, American Legion Post #622 in Prairie du Rocher, and a dedicated member of the U.S. Navy SeaBee Veterans of America, Chapter Island X-5 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Mike was often seen mowing his grass or washing his car. He enjoyed car rides and volunteered to take people to appointments. He was compassionate and had a great sense of humor. He also loved to travel and was always helping others.

Mike had served in the Army Reserves for 4 years in 1971 and then enlisted in the Navy Reserves and served in the SeaBees until his discharge in 1990. He had a “Can Do” attitude throughout his life and was deeply proud of his service. The only thing he was more proud of and involved with was his family, especially his grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: Parents, 2 Brothers – Stanley (Nancy) Sauer and Dean Sauer

Mike donated his body to Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. A Memorial Mass will take place at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud in November, with a Celebration of Life Gathering following at the American Legion in Prairie du Rocher.
