It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Melvin L. Wainio on October 8, 2024, at Grande Point Nursing Home in Richmond Heights, Ohio. For 45 years, he resided in Euclid, Ohio with his family.
Melvin was born in Fairport Harbor on September 14, 1939, to Tauno and Caroline (nee Goodenough) Wainionpaa. He was the cherished husband of Mary Ellen (nee Eckenrode) for 55 years, the beloved father of David (Michelle), and the proud grandfather of Alex House. Melvin was also the dear brother of Aileen (Albert “Abbie”, deceased) Lampella and Ann (deceased) Woodside, and the uncle of Reverend Thomas Lampella, Barbara Burr, Scott (Brenda) Woodside, and Kirk (deceased) Woodside. Additionally, he was the great-uncle of Elise (Jeremy) Freeman, Ryan Burr, Brady Burr, Eric (deceased) Woodside, Scott Woodside, and Shelby Woodside. He was the brother-in-law of Joseph (Cathy) Eckenrode.
Melvin served as a proud veteran of the United States Navy from 1958 to 1965, notably as a Seabee. During his service, he was honored with two Good Conduct medals. Following his military career, he retired from Rockwell Automation and was affiliated with Baily Controls and Picker International.
Melvin was a creative individual who dedicated his efforts to projects aimed at helping others reconnect with their creativity. Notably, he undertook a project to establish a space where individuals could repair broken items and engage in collaborative creation. Furthermore, he authored a book under the pseudonym, Lem Noel entitled “The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil,” which emphasized the significance of creation as the key to life, and to make everyone creative again (MECA).
A devout Christian, Melvin found joy in discussing topics related to God, Jesus, and the Bible.
Melvin’s presence will be deeply missed by his family and friends. A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, October 20th, at 2:00 pm (location to be announced).
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the United Way would be deeply appreciated.
