Lawrence “Larry” Maddox, 83, of Fredericksburg passed away on Friday, August 23, 2024, at home surrounded by family. Larry passed due to complications from congestive heart failure.
Larry grew up in Cherry Hill hunting, fishing, and playing sports. He attended Gar-field HS. He worked with his dad, James Crellon Maddox at the factory at the end of Cherry Hill Road. He also worked at Skips Auto Parts and the weigh station on Route 1 near Cherry Hill Road.
Larry joined and served in the US Navy as a Seabee working heavy equipment to build shelters, roads and airfields, paving the way for other armed forces. He loved his travels, seeing how other cultures lived, and supporting his country. He retired in 1987 from the Navy and returned home to Virginia.
From there, he continued his love of operating heavy equipment and went to work for a local paving company where he worked until he retired for a second time.
Larry will be remembered best for his big heart, loving nature, and great sense of humor.
Larry is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Maddox; children Belinda Thomas and Kevin Maddox; stepchildren, Bonnie Heflin, Gwen Hicks, and Pam Schmitz; 11 grandchildren, Felicia, Chris, Zachary, Melissa, Meagan, Kevin Jr., Amanda, Stephanie, Robbie, Samantha, and Devon; 16 great-grandchildren, Blaine, Jacob, Tyler, Aiden, Carter, Cooper, June, Abi, Reese, Steven, Jude, Kyle, Charlotte, Brylie, Kylie, and Journey; and siblings David Maddox, Eleanor Reale, and Charlotte Barnes.
Larry was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Mae Maddox; oldest son, Larry Maddox, Jr.; brother Vernon Maddox; sister Edna Bushey; and parents James and Lena Maddox. And let’s not forget his beloved pet labrador, Seabee.
