WII Navy veteran, proud and devoted family man,
avid sportsman, active in the church and community
Joseph Murano passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025, at Monmouth Crossing in Freehold, NJ, at the age of 100. Born in Newark, NJ to Francesco and Mary Murano, he lived a full and vibrant life. He was a proud graduate of Belleville High School.
Following graduation, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the SeaBees construction battalion during World War II. Stationed in New Guinea, Joe proudly served his country by building infrastructure to support the fleet. He was awarded the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Service Medal with one star, and the World War II Victory Medal. On his 100th birthday, the Freehold American Legion presented Joe with a Certificate of Honor in recognition of this service.
Joe married the love of his life, Angelina Aballo, in 1950 and together they made their home in Fanwood, NJ, in 1954. Their 65 years in Fanwood were marked by their active participation in the local community. Joe was a devoted parishioner of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church in Scotch Plains, where he found joy in contributing to the life of the church.
An avid sportsman, Joe enjoyed playing softball in both the St. Bart’s Old Timers and the Union County Seniors leagues, continuing to play well into his 80s. His love for the game and camaraderie with teammates reflected his zest for life. He also enjoyed golf and bowling for many years. Professionally, Joe spent many years as a delivery driver for Anheuser Busch, retiring after nearly four decades of dedicated service.
Joe also had a deep appreciation for music, particularly the sounds of big band and opera, which he enjoyed listening to throughout his life. Joe and Angie shared a passion for dancing, and their graceful moves together reflected their lifelong love for one another.
Predeceased by his dear wife of 69 years in 2020, Joe leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by their five children: Frank (Kathy) Murano, Marilee Candino, Emil Murano, Steve (Laura) Murano, and Joann Murano. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, whose lives were enriched by his warmth, wisdom, and enduring love.
