Graham, North Carolina – Joseph James Carty, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on September 13, 2024. Born on March 19, 1936, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, Joseph grew up in nearby Braintree. Despite red hair and freckles, he found joy in the summers spent on Cape Cod, where he forged lifelong memories by the sea which continued throughout his life.
Joseph’s dedication to education led him to earn an engineering degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a milestone he cherished throughout his life. He proudly served in the United States Navy as part of the Seabees, applying his technical skills in meaningful ways during his service. It was during this time that he met Jane (Neilan) at a mixer with MIT and Simmons College. After his time in the Navy, Joseph began a long and successful career with IBM, where he, Jane and the family traveled extensively across the country and around the globe.
Together, they built a beautiful family, welcoming four children: Jim, Tom, Sara, and Matt. Joe instilled in his children the values of hard work, curiosity, and the importance of family.
After retiring at the age of 56, Joe and Jane settled in Hilton Head Island, where Joe became the Director of The United Way and met special people and friends. They were active members of St. Francis by the Sea Parish. During this time, they relished travel, adventure, and relaxation. Joe was heartbroken by Jane’s passing in 2007, but he found Laura Mascarella, whom he married in 2011. Laura remained a devoted partner, providing comfort and companionship through life’s ups and downs.
Joe will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who will remember him not only for his achievements but for his warmth, laughter, and kindness. He is survived by his children, grandchildren (Lucy, Ian, Joseph, Ethan, Mairead and Addison), and his wife, Laura. In their hearts, he will live on as a guiding light, inspiring them to embrace life with the same passion he did. Rest in peace, Joseph; your legacy of love will endure. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
