Final Salute

Joseph Daniel Smith, 98, of Northport, New York, peacefully passed away at his home in East Northport on January 27, 2025 surrounded by his family.

Joe was born on July 30, 1926 to Walter and Catherine Smith in Newark, NJ and was soon followed by his 3 siblings, Walter, Mary and Catherine. At 16, he joined the Navy and served in the Mariana Islands as a Seabee during World War 2. He returned home and became involved in the Golden Gloves boxing program and the semi-pro football Ozone Park Bombers before joining the New York Police Department. Joe served in the Rockaway Beach community for 37 years, most of which was as the community affairs officer at the 100th Precinct. He retired in 1989.

Joe and his wife Patricia had 3 children, Joseph, Ann (Robert) and Walter (Brandy) and 6 grandchildren, Ryan, Lauren, Nicole, Robert Jr., Joanna and Garrison. Joe’s remaining time was brightened by his great granddaughter Mariel. Joe is survived by his children, grandchildren and great granddaughter, sister Mary, sister-in-law Rita and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Patsy, his sister Catherine and brother Walter.

Visitation at Nolan Funeral Home, 5 Laurel Avenue, Northport NY on Sunday, February 2, 2025 from 2-6 pm. Funeral mass at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, 53 Prospect Road, Centerport, NY on Monday, February 3, 2025 at 10 am. Burial to follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
