Joseph A. Kurtz of Trophy Club, Texas, passed away on February 12, 2024, sixteen days shy of his 100th birthday. He was born in St. Louis, MO, to parents Meyer and Olga Kurtz.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Bernice (Riggs); Son, Richard Kurtz, and granddaughter, Tiffany Kurtz.
Joe spent four years in the US Navy Seabees during WWII and was awarded two bronze stars for his meritorious service and valor. After proudly serving his country, he built his career around the concrete industry that allowed him to travel the world extensively. He retired from Pavement Specialist, Inc as Vice President and General Manager in 1974. He was President of the International Grooving and Grinding Association from 1975-1977 and in 1990 he was elected as an Honorary Life Member.
In 1988, Joe received the Presidential Award for Distinguished Achievement by the American Concrete & Pavement Association and in 1990, he was recognized by the Space Technology Hall of Fame for contributions to the development of Safety Grooving.
Joe loved to fly! In 1952, he earned his private pilot license and then went on to complete the instruction required for his commercial license. An avid golfer, he enjoyed playing at many courses in the US and throughout the world. Joe was a devoted family man, always there for his loved ones and willing to help. He was truly a giant of a man, one of the best of “the Greatest Generation” and forever a gentleman.
His memory will be forever held in the hearts of his surviving family: Daughter, Sandra Niswonger and husband Wendell; son, Joe Kurtz, Jr. and wife Darlene; Grandchildren, Bryan Kurtz (Tonya), Scott Niswonger (Ana), Wendy Mery (Jeff) and Todd Niswonger (Ashley); Great-Grandchildren, Bryton Kurtz (Maddie), Mackenzie WeHunt (Seth), Samantha Kurtz, Cooper & Skyler Mery, and Cyrus Niswonger; Sister, Wanda O’Neal; Sister- in -law, Judy Mayfield (Paul) and several nieces and nephews.
