MOUNT CARMEL – John “Jake” Hirsh, 96, of 236 S. Locust St., passed away Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at Mount Carmel Senior Living Community.

He was born in Mount Carmel, Dec. 17, 1926, a son of the late Edward and Mary (Shetulski) Hirsh.

Jake attended Mount Carmel schools.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 until 1947. He was attached to the Seabee’s unit of the Navy. He participated in South Pacific Philippine invasion and was stationed in the Pacific theater and China Sea.

On Nov. 27, 1948, in Our Mother of Consolation Church, he married Dorothy (Zarzeci) Hirsh, who preceded him in death May 3, 2013.

He had been employed for more than 35 years as re-capper of tires at the former Bolstrum’s tire service, in Mount Carmel, before his retirement.

Jake was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 2110 where he was a past commander, Clover Hose Co. and the Knights of Columbus Council 628, all of Mount Carmel.

Surviving are a daughter, Eileen Hirsch, of Mount Carmel; two sisters, Lorraine Chicalo, of Paxinos, and Sister Marie Hirsch of Immaculata.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Moyer; three brothers, Thomas, Leonard and Aloysius Hirsch; and a special friend, Helen Daniels.

HIRSH – John “Jake” Hirsh, 96, of 236 S. Locust St., Mount Carmel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church with the Very Rev. Francis J. Karwacki, pastor, as celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beaverdale. A viewing will be held from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Joseph J. Stutz Inc. Funeral Home, 40 S. Market St., Mount Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz III, supervisor. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 47 S.
