Nicklus, John J, 98, of Toms River, NJ, formerly of Ridgewood, NJ passed away on October 30, 2024. Beloved father to Scott Nicklus, his wife Nicole. Loving grandfather of Robyn Dauster, Kellie Nicklus, and Heidi Nicklus. Dear great-grandfather of Aubree Fitch and Everly Dauster. John was predeceased by his wife Carol. John was a Naval Seabee, stationed in the South Pacific during WWII and in the second landing of Okinawa and Guam. John proudly served his community as an active member of the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department for 72 years, serving as Chief from 1963-1964. He belonged to the NW Bergan Mutual Aid Association, was an exempt and life member of the NJ State Firemen’s Association, American Legion Post 53, and Ridgewood VFW. He worked 13 years for the railroad and then went on to become the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation in Ridgewood for 28 years, retiring in 1988. Visitation will be Friday, November 1st from 4-8PM at the C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home in Ridgewood NJ. A graveside funeral will be held Saturday, November 2nd, at 10AM at Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood, NJ. Please assemble at 9AM on November 2nd at C.C Van Emburgh prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association and the Captain Dillon Rinaldo Foundation.
