West Newbury – John Francis Cormier, 94, died November 22, 2020 at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen.
He was born in Haverhill, MA in November, 1926 to the late Tilman and Julia Cormier. He attended Haverhill public schools before working in manufacturing for several years, then enlisting in the U.S. Navy Seabees at the age of 18. He served our country proudly during WWII. John was serving on the island of Okinawa when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
Later in life he graduated from Northern Essex Community College. He was employed for decades at Western Electric testing electronic equipment until his retirement.
He enjoyed traveling, especially in Europe and the Caribbean Islands, flea marketing, gardening and plant collecting. He took great pride in cutting his own trees, splitting the wood and heating his home right up to his 90th birthday.
John is survived by his daughters, Deborah Streiff and her husband, Samuel of Rowley, and Michelle Chase and her husband, Jerry of NH; grandchildren, Elizabeth Whelan and her husband, Donald, Eric Agosta, Ann Marie Wright and her husband, Jesse, and Jennifer Monroy and her husband Victor; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Marion Pitts and her husband William; sister-in-law, Mary Cormier; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents John was predeceased by his wife Constance Cormier; his first wife Ruth Cormier and their daughter Kathryn Ann Cormier as well his siblings Natalie, Edward, Tilman and Ann.
Due to COVID restrictions Mass and Burial will be private. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Cormier’s family with his funeral arrangements.
