James V. D’Amore, Sr., 90, of Clarksburg, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Deborah Heart and Lung, Browns Mills. Born in and raised in Newark, he joined the Navy in December of 1942 and served with the 11th Special Seabee attached to 6th Marine Division during WWII. James was very proud of his service to his country and was an active member of the Freehold VFW Local 4374, a member of the American Legion and an honorary member of the Vietnam War Veterans and the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. Every Memorial Day, James would lay flags at the graves of local cemeteries and was still doing this patriotic act at the age of 90. James retired from Branch Motor Express in Newark where he was a truck driver for 38 years. He later went on to work for Halka Nursery in Millstone for 10 years. James had a big heart and loved to help people. He was an active volunteer for several groups including the local food pantries, the Millstone Elks and St. John’s Church in Allentown.
James bought a farm in 1950 in Clarksburg, where he built several homes, including one for his daughter in 1980 and one for himself in 1985. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, camping and fishing. Most of all, James loved his family and looked forward to gatherings with his large extended family.
Son of the late Filipo and Carmela D’Amore, James was predeceased by seven brothers, Alfred, Atilio, Carmine, Joseph, Frank, Antony and Natale D’Amore and two sisters, Anna Antonelli and Rose Croce. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Jane J. D’Amore; his son, James V. D’Amore, Jr.; his daughter and son-in-law; Diane and Arthur Wescott, Sr.; his grandson A.J. Wescott all of Clarksburg; his sister, Margaret Dafgek of Edison as well as countless numbers of loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held 1:15 pm on Thursday, August 28th at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 S. Main St. Allentown. The Rev. Brian Woodrow will officiate. Interment will follow at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown. Friends may call 10am until the time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in James’ name to Deborah Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 820, Browns Mills, NJ 08015.
