James P. Elder, a resident of Nutley, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 18. Born and raised in East Orange, he was a 1950 graduate of Clifford Scott High School and attended two years at Upsala College. James also served in the Navy Seabees reserves.
He retired from the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission in 2007 after 25 years of service. Prior to that, he was the owner of East Orange Tire Service for 30 years. A member of the Rutherford Bible Chapel, James was known for his willingness to help others. He could fix anything and loved spending time at his favorite place, Garnet Hill Lodge in the Adirondacks.
He is survived by his loving children, Mary Beth Elder of Wayne, James H. Elder and wife, Robin of Green Lane, PA, Susan E. Elder of Nutley, Paul W. Elder and wife, Marigsa of Lake Mary, FL, by his dear grandchildren, James P. Elder and wife, Jennifer, Daniel S. Elder and wife Brianna, Jeanette E. Abate and husband, Nicholas F. Menillo, Stephen R. Abate, William J. and Catherine A. Elder, and by his great-granddaughters, Rebecca Elder and Madeleine Abate, and by his dear twin sister, Jean A. Wilson of Chambersburg, PA. James was predeceased by his beloved and devoted wife, Marian Pine Elder, his parents, William and Eleanor Elder, and sisters, Wilma Chambers, Eleanor Davidson, and Marian Taylor. His family is very grateful for the kind services of the staff at Hackensack University Medical Center during his last week.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 23 at 8 PM at Allwood Funeral Home, 660 Allwood Road, Clifton. Visiting hours are 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM on Tuesday, August 23. Burial will take place on Wednesday, August 24 at Laurel Grove Memorial Park in Totowa after a brief service at Allwood Funeral Home.
