Mr. James “Jimmy” A. Alberter

Date of birth 10/25/1925
Date of passing 09/27/2020

CANFIELD — James “Jimmy” A. Alberter, 94, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, in the comfort of his home, with family at his side.

He was born Oct. 25, 1925, in Johnstown, Pa., to the late Charles and Beatrice White Alberter.

After moving to Youngstown, he attended Austintown Fitch High School, where he played football. After his 17th birthday, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, because the world was at war and he wanted to do his part.

Jimmy proudly served in World War II for three years as a Navy Seabee in the 100th Construction Battalion, where their motto was “We Build, We Fight, Can Do.” He was stationed in the South Pacific building airfields, roads and bridges to support the efforts of U.S. and allied forces.

Following the war, he returned home to Youngstown in 1946, where he met his bride-to-be, Betty Jean Waller, at the Idora Park roller skating rink. They were married Nov. 16, 1949 and spent over 68 wonderful years together.

As a civilian, he continued in the construction trade as a structural ironworker, where he was a member of the Ironworkers Local 207. He eventually became the chapter’s president and then served as the business agent for nearly three terms. After 42 dedicated years in the trade, he retired in 1988.

Jim was a hardworking, energetic guy who enjoyed many activities throughout his life. He loved being outdoors, whether it was doing projects around the house or just sitting on the front porch drinking a beer. He had a lifelong interest in aircraft, especially from the WWII era, and he piloted small aircraft himself. He loved automobiles, attended classic car shows and even won a few awards. In later years, Jimmy and Betty found great enjoyment in square dancing and the friendships they developed. We cannot forget the tea parties and roller-skating he shared with his granddaughter. He was a dedicated husband and father who supported his family in any way they needed. He will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Waller) Alberter in 2018. He leaves his son, Kirk (Terry) Alberter; his daughter, Rebecca (Scott) Meeks; his granddaughter, Cassandra (Joshua) Filipovich; and two great-granddaughters.

A private celebration of life will be held later for family.
