James Francis “Jim Jim” Dempsey, 95, passed away at 12:54 a.m. on April 7, 2026, following a short battle with coronavirus and congestive heart failure. Born on July 22, 1930, in Rye, New York, Jim lived a long life defined by devotion to his family, dedication to his work, and a quiet, enduring kindness that touched all who knew him.
Jim was a devoted husband of 67 years to his beloved wife, Maryann Dempsey, and a proud and loving father to Linda Dempsey and Mark Dempsey. He is also survived by his brother, Timmy, and his sister, Sue. He was predeceased by four of his seven siblings: Nancy, Dick, Bobby, and Jerry, all of whom he held close throughout his life.
Jim served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee during the Korean conflict, where he helped build Quonset huts on Kwajalein Atoll while the government conducted atomic testing nearby. Following his military service, he returned home to Rye and dedicated himself to the family business, eventually taking it over from his father. Together with his brothers Bobby and Dick, he helped grow and sustain the business until their retirements.
Known for his extraordinary commitment and remarkable kindness, Jim was a steady presence in the lives of those around him. He found joy in music, especially the voices of Crystal Gayle and Rod Stewart, and he cherished attending concerts by Johnny Mathis with his wife. In his later years, Jim developed a special talent for finding a great deal, becoming something of a legend at Kohl’s, where he shopped with unmatched skill and enthusiasm.
At home, Jim’s personality shone through in small, memorable ways-like the little songs he would make up and sing about local Rye personalities, bringing smiles and laughter to his family.
A funeral service will be held on April 9 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, New York, followed by interment at Greenwood Union Cemetery.
Jim will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and friend-a man whose life was marked by hard work, humor, loyalty, and love
