James D. “Jim” Hoversten

77, passed away at home May 5, 2021. He spent his last days sur-rounded by loved ones, his dogs, and the nature he loved.

Jim was born in Alden, Iowa, and grew up in Menahga, Minnesota. He served in Vietnam as a Navy Seabee in the welding dive unit and dove to extreme depths. After the service he set his sights to the sky and got his pilot’s license. He built his house with his wife, Rene, and cared for their land in Princeton where they raised their family. He worked most of his sheetmetal career side-by-side with his identical twin brother, John (and they called each other most every morning and evening). After retirement, he and John spent many summers at their cabin in Homer, Alaska, fishing for halibut and salmon and making friends with the locals. Family was important to him, as were the outdoors, wildlife and making things from his own hands. He hunted for many years, but lately preferred spotting deer and grouse to shooting them.

He will be missed by his wife, Rene; son, Jeff; daughter, Kym; and granddaughter, Siena (who knew him as “Grumpa”); the Hoversten brothers, Kane, John, Roger, Larry, Jerry, and Phil; sisters, Jean and Sonia, and many, many who called him uncle, brother-in-law and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Ida, and brothers Sonny, Ted and Kenny. He was joined in death later the same day by his sister, Margaret, who passed away of unrelated causes.

Jim wasn’t a fan of funerals or funeral homes, so we will have a celebration of life, to be held later this summer in the great outdoors. He also didn’t particularly like parties, but he has been overruled.

In lieu of flowers, tribute memorials are preferred to the Minnesota Land Trust (651-647-9590) to protect and restore the natural places he cherished, or to another wildlife charity of your choosing.
