James Benton “Jimmy” Carruth 83, of Amite County, passed away August 10, 2022 at his residence.
Visitation will be Saturday August 13, 2022 at Hartman Jones Funeral Home from 11:00 AM until services at 1:00 PM. Rev. Vann Windom will officiate.
Mr. Carruth was born on December 2, 1938 in San Diego, CA to the late James Benton Carruth Sr. and Mary Lea Moore Carruth.
Mr. Carruth was a graduate of Southwest Mississippi Junior College. He then enlisted in the U. S. Navy where he would serve for 11 years and three tours of duty in the Vietnam War as a Navy Seabee. Upon returning home he had a long career in local law enforcement, he worked for the Pike County Sherrif’s Department and would later retire from the Mccomb Police Department as a Detective. He also served 11 years in the Mississippi National Guard.
Mr. Carruth was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, gardening and bush hogging. He was also a very talented gunsmith. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in McComb and later joined West Mccomb Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, Bowen Edward Stollenwerck.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years Mrs. Harriet JoAnn Cleveland Carruth of Amite County; sons Jeffrey Benton Carruth and his wife Lynette of Southern Pines, NC; Michael James Carruth and his wife Bridgett of Griffin, GA; daughter Callie Anne Carruth-Harper and her husband Mike of Waco, TX; sister JoAnn C. Stollenwerck of Macon, GA; six grandchildren Benton, Mia, Clayton and JohnaClaire Carruth, Hutson and Eleanor “Ella” Harper; and a longtime special friend and caregiver Jessie Graham; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
