Mr. Hubert V. “Art” Borba Obituary
A funeral service will be held Monday in San Mateo for Hubert V. (Art) Borba, an engineer and executive with San Francisco’s Bechtel Corp. for more than 30 years.
Mr. Borba died Wednesday at Mills Memorial Hospital in San Mateo after a lengthy illness. He was 75.
At his retirement in 1984, Mr. Borba was in charge of Bechtel’s worldwide petroleum operations and he remained a consultant to the company on projects in Turkey following his retirement.
Born and raised in Watsonville, he attended schools in Watsonville and Salinas and then the University of California at Berkeley before enlisting in the U.S. Navy Seabies in 1942.
After the war, he worked on various construction projects around the Bay Area before joining Bechtel on the Vermillion Valley Dam project in Fresno in 1953. Described by company management as “a true ambassador for the Bechtel family,” Borba accepted assignments on company projects in Canada, Australia, Indonesia, Algeria, Italy, Great Britain and Saudi Arabia.
In Dec. 1976, Mr. Borba became manager of worldwide construction and operations for Bechtel’s pipeline and production facilities division.
Four years later, he was promoted to construction manager for the company’s refinery and chemical division and, subsequently, to the same position for Houston Bechtel Petroleum, Inc.
A longtime resident of San Mateo, Mr. Borba was also a lifetime member of the San Mateo Elks Lodge II.
He is survived by his wife Irene of San Mateo; and three daughters, Leslie Andona of San Jose, Michelle Tomaselli of Palo Alto and Melinda Borba of San Mateo; and four grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Sneider and Sullivan Funeral Home, 977 South El Camino Real, San Mateo.
The family suggests that contributions in Mr. Borba’s memory be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
