Herrick “Rick” W. Spicer, 78, of Stevensville passed away on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021 at Riveridge Manor in Niles.

A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Niles Avenue Baptist Church, 1301 Niles Ave., St. Joseph. Burial will follow in Lincoln Township Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m., also at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Niles Avenue Baptist Church. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.starks -menchinger.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel, St. Joseph.

Rick was born on June 14, 1943, to Isaac and Adeline (Grundmann) Spicer in Bridgeport, Conn. He graduated from Lakeshore High School in 1961 and served his carpentry apprenticeship through Lake Michigan College. Rick honorably served in the United States Navy Seabees.

On July 26, 1970, he married Phyllis Muriel Henson in Niles Avenue Baptist Church. Rick and Muriel have remained in the same home for the entirety of their 51 years of marriage.

Rick was part of the Local 898 Carpenters Union and built numerous homes and businesses throughout the area. He has also been an accomplished landlord for 35 years, the second largest in the Benton Harbor area. Rick has been a lifetime member at Niles Avenue Baptist Church and has served as a deacon and a music director for the congregation, where he loved to sing. He truly was a “jack-of-all-trades” and a very selfless man, always willing to help anyone.

Rick is survived by his wife, Muriel Spicer; daughter, Brenda (Michael) Berlew of Bronson, Mich.; son, William (Shawn Bennett) Spicer of Belgrade, Mont.; grandchildren: Brion Binkley, Steven Binkley, Elizabeth Berlew; and sister, Grace Evans.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Isaac and Adeline Spicer; and brother, Dean Amelung.
