Herbert “Gordon” Lawson, 82, of Okmulgee, OK, passed away on January 22, 2025, at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Center in Muskogee, OK. He was born on August 28, 1942, in Morrilton, AR, the son of Herbert Earl Lawson and Frances Lawson (Rainey). Gordon was a proud retired Tulsa Police Officer, a Vietnam veteran, and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Marlene Lawson; his children, LaDawn Stabler and George Stabler of Pawhuska, OK, and Tami Thompson and Mike Durie of Tulsa, OK; grandson, Daniel Stabler and Amanda Stabler of Broken Arrow, OK. Daniel lovingly referred to him as his “Policeman Papa.” Gordon is also survived by his brother, Terry Lawson, and his wife LeAnn of Fayetteville, AR, as well as his sister-in-law Sylvia Lawson of Wichita, KS, wife of his late brother, Tommy Lawson. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and a host of other family and friends.
Gordon was a man of many passions. He had a deep love for motorcycles, and animals— especially horses and dogs—and even ran a dog rescue, Oklahoma Lucky Dawgs, with Marlene. He enjoyed showing horses, doodling, drawing, and oil painting. Known for his quick wit and great sense of humor, Gordon loved teasing those around him and filling their lives with laughter. He cherished time spent with his loved ones and his animals. He especially loved going to casinos with his wife, Marlene.
Gordon served his country with honor as an electrician in the Navy during the Vietnam War, where he was a Navy Seabee. He often joked about his time on patrol in rice paddies, humorously vowing never to eat rice or fish again—and he kept his promise. Gordon earned a Purple Heart while on patrol with the Tulsa Police Department, reflecting his bravery and dedication to protecting his community.
Gordon will be remembered for his intelligence, onery charm, artistic spirit, and unwavering love for his family, friends, and animals. He lived a full and meaningful life, and his memory will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
