Mr. Harry Acker

Harry Acker, 100, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Dec. 17 at the Windemere Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia Beach.

Born April 13, 1913, in Scranton, son of the late Harry and Carrie (Fellows) Acker, Harry served as a Navy Seabee during World War II in the Pacific. He was a 1951 graduate of the University of Scranton and director of athletics for the city of Scranton in the late 1940s. He was employed by the Department of the Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, for 26 years, retiring in 1983.

He was an avid sports fan and played golf well into his 90s.

He is survived by a son, Harry Acker, and wife, Kathy, Virginia Beach; a son-in-law, Charles Craig, Easton, Md.; a niece, Carol Craft, Warwick, R.I.; grandchildren, Thomas Acker, and wife, Kelli, and Jack Craig and wife, Julie; and great-grandchildren, McKayla and Alex Acker.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Campion Acker; a daughter, Mary Ruth Craig; a brother; and three sisters.

Harry’s family would like to thank the staff at Windemere Nursing Home for its fine care and concern.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Ave., Scranton, by the Rev. Arthur W. Davis. Interment, Forest Hill Cemetery, Dunmore.

Friends may call Saturday from 9:30 to 11.
