George “Ed” Edward Meiser, 79, of Bethalto, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 6, 2026, at 3:14 pm, while at Alton Memorial Hospital under the care of BJC Hospice, with his family by his side.
He was born on May 20, 1946, in Alton, IL, the son of George R. and Eileen T. (Relaford) Meiser. Ed married Charleen J. Gaber in Wood River, on June 20, 1970. She survives.
After graduating from Wood River High School in 1964, Ed joined the United States Navy serving as a Seabee. While serving he proudly went out for two tours during the Vietnam War, from 1969 to 1971. After serving, he became a carpenter by trade. He worked out of the Local Union Halls 377 and 1808. For many years he was a foreman for JJ Wuellner and Sons. Ed was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the American Legion. As a Scoutmaster for many years, Ed played an important role in the Order of the Arrow, and took great pride in the fact that both of his boys became Eagle Scouts as well. Ed loved to take trips out west, often traveling with his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching old western movies, especially John Wayne, hunting, fishing, and traveling to new places. Most of all, he loved spending time with his friends and family and watching his grandchildren play sports.
Along with his wife, Charleen, he is survived by his sons and their wives, Todd (Brenda) Meiser of Bethalto, and Tom (Melissa) Meiser of Bethalto; a brother and sister-in-law, William (Toni) Meiser of Cottage Hills; six grandchildren, Tory (Ryan) McGuire of Godfrey, Mady (Seth) Terry of Godfrey, Ethan Meiser of Bethalto, Hunter Meiser of Bethalto, Hannah Meiser of Bethalto, and Blake Meiser of Bethalto; a great-grandson, Theo Terry; and great-granddaughter, Amelia McGuire arriving in late April.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Eileen; and a great-granddaughter, Josie McGuire.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 4 to 7:30 pm, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Funeral service will be at the funeral home on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 11 am. Pastor Mike Kohlbaker will officiate.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
