Francis “Frank” Edgar Sherman, a resident of DeSoto County for the past 40 years, died peacefully on Monday, October 7, 2024 at the Lakewood Ranch Tidewell Hospice House in Florida.
Frank was born on March 22, 1944 in Binghamton, New York to Percy James Sherman and Ruth Pembleton.
He is preceded in death by his late wife, Johnnie Bell Johnson-Sherman, and survived by 6 Stepchildren.
Raised as an orphan, Frank had a great affinity for his family of fellow veterans. His love for and service to his fellow veterans was always first and foremost in his mind.
Frank served his country in Vietnam as a Navy SeaBee, and was a member of the Navy SeaBee Veterans of America, Inc., and a member of the Vietnam Brotherhood, American Legion, VFW, and the DAV.
Frank was a member of the National Association County Veterans Service Officers. He served as a Veteran’s Service Officer with both the DAV and later with the VFW, and had a reputation for helping many veterans receive compensation benefits from the VA.
His hobbies were word puzzles and putting together model cars, boats and airplanes and then giving them as gifts to his fellow residents and staff at the Arcadia Oaks where he was a long time resident. Frank had an amiable personality and a generous nature.
Frank’s final wishes were to be interred at the Sarasota National Veteran Cemetery where a service will be held at the Pavilion on November 1, 2024 at 11:00 am.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations might be sent instead to the Veteran’s Organization or Veteran’s Charity of your choosing.
