Edward “Bud” McCallen Obituary

Long time Truckee resident Edward “Bud” McCallen passed away on January 6, 2020 in Reno, Nevada at the age of 91.

During his childhood, Bud’s father worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad and starting in 1938 the family moved back and forth between Roseville and Truckee.

Bud enlisted in the Navy in the early 1950’s and worked in the Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) on the construction of the U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay in the Philippines. After his military service he joined the California Highway Patrol stationed first in Oakland and then in 1957 transferred with his young family to the Truckee he had learned to love in his childhood.

In the 1960s, Bud went into business for himself operating a logging truck and for many years was a familiar sight bringing timber to the Truckee lumber mill from the forest areas surrounding the Truckee and the Lake Tahoe region. Bud loved the small-town atmosphere of “old Truckee” the open space and beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains and the western life style. He appreciated living in the golden age of Truckee in the 50’s and 60’s where you literally knew everyone in town and there was plenty of room to roam.

In retirement he and his wife Louise moved to Nevada to escape the snow and lead a slower-paced life.

He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Louise, children Barbara Arnett of Reno, Rod (Julie) McCallen of Denver, and David (Rose) McCallen of Livermore California along with four grand-children and three great grand-children. No services were held at his request.
