Donald Lee “Donnie” Burch, 74, of Hanover, Indiana, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, at Meadow View Health and Rehab in Salem, Indiana.
He was born on May 12, 1948, in Underwood, Indiana, to Samuel “Sammy” and Dolly Davis Burch. He graduated from Henryville High School in 1966. He was raised in Underwood and had lived in Hanover the last 12 years. He married Paula Stice in 1967 and they had a daughter. He was inducted into the US Navy on Aug. 19, 1968, in Scottsburg, Indiana, and served in the Seabees during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 12, 1969, at Great Lakes, Illinois, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, and the Vietnam Service Medal with One Bronze Star. He transferred to the Reserves and was honorably discharged on April 21, 1974. He worked as a truck driver for Mason and Mefford for 11 years and had been a truck driver for Pepsi Cola for 10 years. Previously, he had worked as a laborer for 10 years at Brown & Williamson. He was a member of the Major Samuel Woodfill Madison Post 9 American Legion and the Madison VFW Post 1969. He was a Baptist and was baptized in a creek in Underwood as a young man. He enjoyed working on cars, going to car shows, riding motorcycles and was devoted to his grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughter, Anitra Squire of Albany, Georgia; a brother, Arthur Burch of Georgia; a sister, Mary Etta Hall of Underwood; and three grandchildren, a great grandson and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Patsy Bernard; and a brother, John Patrick Davis.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 12, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison. Visitation is 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11 and 10 a.m. until the time of services on Monday at the funeral home. A final salute with military honors will be provided by the Major Samuel Woodfill Madison Post 9 American Legion.
