Sam Downey, 85, of Bryan, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.A time for family to receive friends will be from 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, November 14, at Hillier Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, November 15 at Rest-Ever Cemetery in Bryan, with full military honors by the American Legion, Earl Graham Post 159.

Sam was born on May 16, 1928 to Eva Rumley Downey and Arthur Downey in Indianola, Iowa. Sam was a member of Alexander Methodist Church in Bryan. He proudly served his country as a US Navy Seabee during World War II. After discharge, Sam became a professional calf roper. He was in the “Turtle Association”, now known as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.Before his retirement, he was an Area Sales Manager for United States Gypsum.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Downey; parents, Eva Rumley Downey and Arthur Downey and brothers, Neil Downey and Doyle Downey.

Sam leaves behind his sisters, Mildred Berry and Dixie Janney both of Canton MO, his son, Mike Downey of Austin, Tx; two daughters, Debbie Butler and husband Ben of Bryan, Tx and Samantha Mumford and husband Robert of Bryan, Tx; grandchildren, Cal Goode, Joshua Goode, Jacob Goode, Gillian Downey and Burke Mumford; great-grandchildren, Madison Goode, Marisa Goode, Macie Goode, Wesley Goode and numerous nieces and nephews.
