Mr. Audun A. Sorenson

Date of birth 09/18/1935
Date of passing 10/02/2025

Audun A. Sorensen, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Lanesville on May 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 18, 1935, in the scenic landscapes of Norway, Audun’s journey led him to a life rich with accomplishments, joy, and the love of those who knew him. At the age of 89, he left this world as he had lived in it—with dignity, strength, and the warmth of his family’s presence.

Audun formerly a resident of Staten Island, had been a “week-ender” before settling full-time in Lanesville 25 years ago. He served with the US Navy Construction Battalion, the Seabees, where he contributed to numerous special projects with the same tenacity and commitment that would define his civilian career. He continued his service through his membership with the Phoenicia American Legion Post #950.

Audun’s professional life was marked by his entrepreneurial spirit, as he was self-employed for decades in the building industry with his company, Sorensen Construction.  He not only built his own home, but many others here in the states and abroad.  His reputation for fine workmanship and creativity made him a sought-after figure in the industry, and his legacy can be seen in the structures that stand as a testament to his skill and vision.

Beyond his professional achievements, Audun’s passions painted the picture of a man who embraced life with vigor and joy. An avid and accomplished downhill alpine skier, he found solace and excitement on the slopes, carving through snow with the same precision he applied to his craft. He was a former member of the Staten Island Ski Club.   His musical talents were equally impressive, as he was a talented accordion player who loved to entertain. Audun’s music brought laughter and rhythm to the many parties he hosted, filling his home with melodies and memories.

Audun was happiest when his home was filled with family and friends, a testament to his generous spirit and love for hosting. His warmth and hospitality were unmatched, and those who had the pleasure of attending his gatherings left with full hearts and cherished moments. In quieter times, Audun enjoyed traveling to Florida, where he could bask in the sunshine and warmth that complemented his bright disposition.

A man of many talents, Audun also found joy in caring for his property and working on various projects. His hands were rarely still, as he was always tending to his land or crafting something new. His dedication to his home and his projects was a reflection of his dedication to his life—always building, improving, and creating.  He had been an active member of the Phoenicia United Methodist Church, and found comfort in his collection of angels.

Audun, known affectionately to friends and family as just that, will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Adrienne Wood Sorensen, bonus son, Michael Ferinden of Leeds, nephew Roy (Elizabeth) Nilsen, and loving friend Debra Benjamin who affectionately called him “Pops”. His parents, Soren and Ragna Sorensen, and his sister Ruth Nilsen, predeceased him, but the legacy they helped shape lives on through the lives he touched.

A service to celebrate the life of Audun will be Wednesday May 7th at 11am at the Phoenicia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ralph Merante as celebrant.  Burial in the Hudler Cemetery Rt. 28 Mt. Tremper.  Friends will be received on Tuesday from  4pm to 7pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia.  You may share a special memory, photo, or condolence with the family on Audun’s Tribute Wall at www.gormleyfuneralhome.com
