Anthony J. Stagnitti Obituary

Anthony J. Stagnitti, 83, James Street, died Tuesday afternoon, May 24, 2011, in Crouse Hospital, Syracuse, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Canastota, on June 8, 1927, he was a son of Carmen and Concettina Emmi Stagnitti.

A lifelong resident of Canastota, Tony attended Canastota schools and served with the United States Navy Seabees during World War II. He married Marlea Kroth in Oneida on Dec. 2, 1950. In 2001, Tony received his high school diploma at Canastota’s graduation with his fellow veterans, who left school during World War II to serve their country.

Prior to his retirement, Tony was employed with the former Griffiss Air Force Base. Following his retirement, he owned and operated an electrical contracting firm and also served as an inspector with Independent Consolidated Inspection Services.

Tony was a communicant of St. Agatha’s Church, a life member and past chief of the Canastota Fire Department (Forbes Hose Co. # 1), served as the deputy fire coordinator for Madison County, a member and past-president of the Madison County Volunteer Firemens Association, a member of the Firemens Association of New York (FASNY), the New York State Fire Chiefs Association, the Madison County Search and Rescue Association, the Madison County Fire Advisory Board, the Central New York Firemens Association, the National Rifle Association and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Canastota Post 600, was an instructor for snowmobiling in New York State and was an avid whitetail deer hunter.

Surviving besides his wife, Marlea, are two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Richard Bergman of Canastota and Elizabeth and Frank Voss of Rochester; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Richard D. and Stacey Stagnitti of Canastota, David W. Stagnitti and his companion, Debbie Miller of Camillus and Thomas J. Stagnitti and his companion, Eileen Feitsma of Vernon; one sister and brother-in-law, Cookie and John Swistak of Canastota; thirteen grandchildren, Amanda Stagnitti, Joshua Stagnitti, Molly Stagnitti, Morgan Stagnitti, Nicholas Stagnitti, Katie Stagnitti, Kristy Crast, Eric, Jason and Allison Stagnitti and Shawn, Becky and Sarah Bergman; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Pauline Lamandia and three brothers, Salvatore “Kippy,” John and Joseph Stagnitti.

Funeral services will be held 9:15 a.m., Saturday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 300 S. Peterboro St., Canastota, and 10 a.m. from St. Agatha’s Church, where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Interment will be made in St. Agatha’s Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, 2-6 p.m., Friday. Contributions, in his memory, may be made to the Canastota Fire Department, Box 81, Canastota, NY 13032. Envelopes for this fund may be obtained at the funeral home.
