Leon A. Wyka Obituary
Leon A. Wyka a lifelong resident of Yonkers NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at age 93.
Leon attended local schools and graduated Saunders Trade & Technical High School 1944. Wanting to join his brothers in WWII, he served with the U.S. Navy Service Construction Battalion division, better known as the Navy Seabees, as a Machinist Mate 3rd class, earning an Honorable Discharge.
Leon was employed by General Motors (Fisher Body) and Otis Elevator prior to joining the Yonkers Police. On October 1, 1956 he was sworn into The Yonkers Police department and on April 9, 1965, was appointed to the Detective Division. He retired in 1989, after 32 years of continuous service.
During his lifetime, Leon was involved in numerous activities:
*Member of PBA
*Active participant in Nodine Hill Senior Center
*Was a member of the YMCA, playing handball and later racquetball with many younger opponents, finally retiring at the age of 90.
*Avid hunter and fisherman, introducing the sports to his sons and grandchildren.
Leon is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Dorothy (nee Bednarchak). Devoted father of Brian (Monica) of Mahopac, Glenn (Marlene) of Yonkers NY, and Leona Trozzi (Guy) of Ridgefield CT. Loving grandfather to Andrew (Kelsie, Wyatt), Danielle, John Michael, Stephanie, Julian, Nathaniel and Isabelle.
Leon was predeceased by his sister, Sophie, and brothers, Deacon Stanley and Edward. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends. “We will miss his stories and jokes and his amazing smile.”
In lieu of flowers, donations in Leon’s name, may be made to St. Casimir’s Church, Yonkers NY or a charity of your choice.
