Edwin (“Eddie”) Plowden, Jr.
Aug 9, 1925 – Jan 8, 2018
Passed away peacefully at 2:25 am
Ed was a third generation San Franciscan, born in the Mission and raised in the Marina district. Ed attended Marina Jr High and Galileo High School.
In 1943, Ed volunteered for the U.S. Navy “Seabees”, and subsequently joined, serving in the Pacific and Philippine theaters. After the war Ed was honorably discharged. When he returned home, he attended Marin Jr college.
At that time he married his high school sweetheart, Pola Marchi. Ed and Pola were married for 61 years and had two wonderful sons, Warner and Scott.
In 1950, following family tradition, Ed entered the carpet industry and trained as a factory rep for Gulistan Carpets (now J.R. Stevens Co.) Ed trained at their factories in New Jersey and their headquarters in New York City. After training he was assigned to their San Francisco branch as a Jr. Salesman.
Ed was transferred to several Midwest branches, and was promoted to Territory Manager. Six years later Ed was transferred back to his beloved San Francisco as branch Manager.
After 45 years in the industry, Ed retired to enjoy, full time, all the activities he and his wife loved to do: increase in travel wherever they wished to go, seeing good movies, broadway shows (when they would come to San Francisco) musicals, concerts, and above all, thoroughly enjoying family and their “tight circle of friends” for gatherings, good food, good wine, and lively and fun conversation.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing golf with friends on courses all over Northern California and Nevada.
Ed was also a loyal 49ers fan from the very first game at Kezar in 1946, and he stayed loyal throughout his whole life.
When Ed lived in New York City in 1950 he lived next to the old Polo Grounds, home of the New York Giants, and at that time became a loyal Giants fan, from there to Seal Stadium to Candlestick, to AT&T Park. He was overjoyed when the Giants came to San Francisco and the dodgers settled in Los Angeles.
After Ed’s wife passed away he felt he still had to lead an active life to keep going. He continued to attend Giants games, to travel, see Broadway shows, concerts and lunched with close friends. Saturday brunch and a good movie with his son and best friend Warner was a must!
Ed always looked forward to special showings of French Impressionist paintings at the DeYoung and Legion of Honor. He enjoyed these visits very much.
Above all, Ed loved the gatherings of all the family for a feast of good times.
Ed leaves his loving son and best friend Warner, his loving granddaughter Laura, daughter in law Diane and husband Jack, and two beautiful and wonderful “self adopted” daughters Carole and Candy. Warner, Laura, Carole, and Candy all added extra joy to Ed’s life.
He also leaves wonderful cousins Claudette and Mike, Sandra, Kirk and Robin, and Bob.
There will be a Neptune Society service, followed by a “grand” luncheon for all of Ed’s family and close friends to celebrate His life.
Donations to the American Cancer Society in Ed’s name would be appreciated by the family.
