Lieutenant
BROIDO–Jeffrey. A New Yorker by birth, Jeff Broido’s career as nuclear engineer for General Atomics brought him to La Jolla in 1963. With GA he was posted for two years at the Swiss National Nuclear Laboratories, some of his happiest years. Jeff was a graduate of James Madison High School in Brooklyn. He earned a BA in 1955 from Columbia College and a BS in 1956 from Columbia’s School of Engineering. After graduation, he served as a naval officer in the Philippines as a Seabee (Naval Construction Battalion), where he helped to build the Cubi Point Naval Air base; in San Francisco; and in the Naval Reserve. He went on to earn graduate degrees from Stanford University in Nuclear Engineering. Jeff’s love and partner in life was his late wife Bev (nee Beverly Bonebrake), whom he met in San Francisco in the late ’50s. They were married for 43 years, until her death in 2005. He also was predeceased by his sister Valerie Broido Kaufman, and his parents, Beatrice Schmerer Broido and Alvin Broido, New York City school principals. He is survived by his children Ellen (Jo Campbell) and Mark (Wendy Dick) and his three grandchildren. His family and friends loved his wide-ranging intellect, friendliness, good humor and hearty laugh, and his deep caring for those in his life.
